Parsha “Shemot” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Saturday, January 10th, 2015

Join Mark Call for two teachings on this week’s Torah portion, “Shemot” (Exodus 1-5).

During the Erev Shabbat teaching, (Friday evening) Mark introduces the new Book, and the importance of the “Names” theme; no, it’s not just the first few verses.

SSM Shemot 2015

The longer teaching from Shabbat, however, is really one that deserves an introduction:

Yes, buckle up!

Not only is this parsha an unequivocal rejection of the “Romans 13 Lie” taught by far too many 501c(3) faith-based Caesar-chartered corporate churches of another god — it’s a powerful refutation of what the Unholy New World Church-State Partnership is doing right now to a people who have forgotten His Written Truth.

Shemot 2015 — “Names, Character, and Choice of Law”

When Shepherds Lie

Thursday, December 4th, 2014

There’s no longer any question that things are “heating up” on the End Times Thermometer.  And while that doesn’t necessarily mean that the events in the world today are imminently of ‘Biblical proportions’ (even after a currency meltdown, world war, and martial law in more and more countries, it might take several years for the final acts to play out) — those with “eyes to see” are taking notice.

So it’s important that those who expect to rely on the promises of Yah (and the alternative will turn out to be gravely disappointing) need to start ‘walking in obedience’ to Him immediately, if not before.  Which is why this author finds certain ‘evangelical’ preachers to be in many respects even more of a threat to those “called by His Name” than  most run-of-the-mill worldly agnostics, or even atheists.  It’s one thing to be oblivious to the Creator, and arguably more insidious when those who CLAIM to call on His Name mislead His sheep.  To destruction.

To wit, more and more presumably Bible-literate pastors — including, unfortunately, many who claim to be “watchmen on the wall” — are warning about the coming End Times, but still departing from ‘the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.’  (I Timothy 4:1)   They focus exclusively on “saving souls”, as if that was the end of it, and ignore the rest of the equation:
“IF you love Me, keep My commands.”    If we are in fact ‘saved by His grace,’ then what is our “reasonable service“?  And don’t they care at all about hearing, “well done, good and faithful servant?”
…as opposed to, “depart from Me, you who work lies [and deny His Word!] — I never knew you!”   (Matthew 7:23)

The Truth really DOES matter.  And (Jeremiah 16:19) — we really have “inherited lies from our fathers.”  And our licensed pastors.   This is important because Scripture contains MANY warnings about false prophets, failed priests, and “imposters [who will] grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.”  (II Timothy 3:13)

We live in a time when deception abounds, and many of us know first-hand the depth of that deception.  It can split communities, and destroy families.  If we are to be ready for the battles to come, we must be “ready, in season and out” to give an answer to those who are being led astray by false shepherds.

A couple of answers to “tough questions” that I heard on a recent preparedness-oriented radio show not only make the point, but should serve to “arm us” with the Sword of His Word when we hear (and we will) similar reasonable-sounding lies:

The ‘voice of evangelism’ was asked by a listener why so many Xtians can be “deceived [into believing] that the body of christ is still under obligation to observe the ‘law of Moses’.”   And even that “Sabbath” thing (that YHVH says over and over again – as if THAT still mattered, that we are to keep “forever,” “throughout our generations,” in “all our dwelling places,” and so on.  Yeah, it’s hard to understand stuff, since He comes right out and tells us).

Well, the ‘man of god’ responded oh-so-folksily…look at Romans 14:6, “talking about food, and talking about the Sabbath.”  And then see Romans 10:4, “For christ is the END of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”   As if he was ignorant of the fact that the word translated as “end” — IN CONTEXT — didn’t mean “the ultimate GOAL of” His torah, or instruction!

I wondered why so many who find the words of Paul so easy to twist (as II Peter 3:15-16 points out) prefer to quote him, rather than just read what the One they call ‘christ’, and CLAIM to believe, said so bluntly!

But then the preacher did just that, and quoted (at least a bit of) Matthew 5:17.  Yes, he stopped after the part that used the English word ‘fulfill.’  And, in the process, ignored the context, and His point, entirely:
“Once something has been fulfilled, it has been terminated.”

And I, admittedly, yelled at the radio.  Lies like that get people killed, or worse.   He tried to claim it was like a 60 month loan, which, once paid off, was just paid.  Done.  For my part, I couldn’t help but think how he’d feel if his wife were to use equally twisted logic to claim that, having ONCE turned down a chance to consummate an affair, her marriage vow was equally ‘fulfilled’, and thus terminated.

The logical fallacy here involves a bogus assumption.  Fulfilled is NOT the same as terminated — especially since the Messiah in the VERY NEXT VERSE says exactly that!  Is “all” fulfilled, even yet?  But that’s not what this preacher claimed.  He did finally get around to reading the rest of the verse, and then explaining it didn’t mean what He clearly said it did!  Instead, he observed that this next line was the  “second time [Jesus] uses the word ‘fulfilled’.”  And the second time that preacher ignored the meaning, too.

So he follows up a specious assumption with a distortion of the meaning of a key word, and the only way to make that fit is to take the entire verse out of context.  In the process, he turns the words of the Messiah on their head — taking a statement that He makes to say He is NOT going to “destroy the torah or the prophets,” and twisting it to claim that he did EXACTLY that!  And as if that wasn’t bad enough, this man who (see the next verses) “breaks [even] the least of these commandments, and teaches men so,” then goes on to claim that He wasn’t talking about the “Ten Commandments” anyway — He was really talking only about ‘the beatitudes’.  (Come on!  what did He just say?  He wasn’t going to make even the smallest change to His Written Word — the ‘torah and the prophets’!)

Sadly, this dissemination is pervasive.  Twisting of Scripture tends to follow a pattern.  There is almost always an assumption.  That allows what follows next — a shift in the real meaning of the words, and a removal of the verse from context.    Key words may be left out, and even whole verses.   But the result all too often ends up being to replace the “commandments of YHVH” with the “traditions of men.”  And ultimately make His Word of “no effect.”

If we do not understand the techniques, and the motivations of Pharisees, Old and New, we might fall into the very trap Paul ALSO warned about, (II Tim. 4:3) “for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine…having itching ears…and shall turn away…from truth…unto fables.”  He’s warning us about exactly what we’re seeing NOW!

This Xtian Twisting from the so-called ‘voice of evangelism’ continued down that inevitable trail.   See Col. 2:15, he continued, again taking the admonition completely out of context, “let no one judge you in food…or regarding…sabbath.”  But that letter was being written to people who had come out of PAGANISM!   What was Paul talking about, if not to warn them about ‘backsliding’?  He even SAID so, just a few verses earlier:  “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after [the Word!]”

Don’t let people judge you for EXACTLY the same things people are judging many of us for TODAY!  Not eating pork, and actually deciding to honor Yah’s Sabbaths instead of man’s traditions of sun-god day and Xmas!

But this false shepherd was on a roll.  He ignored the context of Galatians 4:9 in exactly the same way, claiming that the “weak and beggarly elements, in which you desire again to be in bondage” was the Torah of YHVH!!!!  “Paul had a fear and an anxiety that they were gonna go back to ‘the law’.”   What an incredible affront to the Author of Scripture Himself!  NO HE DID NOT!  And Paul just made that VERY clear, in the preceding verse, when he referred to a time when those he was writing to “did NOT know God,” but served “those which by nature are not gods.”  They were pagans.   He was warning them about not going back to paganism.  And Paul makes the same point in the letter to the Colossians, just a few verses LATER, (Col. 2:22) when he makes it clear that he was talking NOT about the Torah of YHVH, but the  “commandments and doctrines of men!”  Not surprisingly, that verse got left out of the ‘lesson’.

Scripture is utterly consistent.  But lies are not.  If the very same Bible which tells us PRECISELY what the Messiah will (and will not – Deuteronomy 13!) do tells us that anyone who CHANGES His Word is a liar, why would we be so foolish as to believe that He would do exactly what He said He would NOT?  It is obviously much easier for deceiving wolves in sheep’s clothing to twist the subtle and often complex writings of Shaul (Paul) than the straightforward teachings of the Word Made Flesh.

I have on occasion been reminded by a friend that not EVERY Christian denomination teaches that ‘the law has been done away with’.  (Admittedly, those who keep sun-god day certainly APPEAR to, whether they know it or not.)   But the lies are insidious, deadly, and pervasive.  The “End Times Deception” is just beginning.   Perilous times are coming, and He warned us for a reason.

An open letter to Christian Talk Radio hosts

Sunday, November 16th, 2014

Between the Ebola ‘Pandemic Panic,’ (which increasingly looks orchestrated, because what leadership could POSSIBLY be doing such incredibly stupid things OTHER than deliberately?) the march toward WW III, and the continuing slow-motion economic meltdown, it is clear to those with “eyes to see” that there are many plagues close at hand.

More and more somewhat ‘mainstream,’ evangelical leaders are slowly beginning to wake up to the fact that something is horribly wrong, as well. But the rapture hasn’t happened yet, so some suffer from a bit of cognitive dissonance. Can it still get much worse, many are asking?

Ultimately, the answer is relatively simple, and it’s been in Scripture all along. But if you’ve been lied to (Jeremiah 16:19 again) all along by a so-called ‘church’ that teaches His “Law” has been done away with and most of the ‘old’ testament is now immaterial anyway, no wonder it’s hard to recognize just how pagan much of what replaced His Truth truly is.

I recently attempted to begin a dialog with a few well-known Christian teachers who are beginning to question a few of the things they have been taught, and certainly see some of the Big Lies from the politicians and their paid propagandists, but who still have difficulty with the ‘come out of her’ concept. Licensed ‘gay marriage’ and subpoenas of sermons seem to have gotten their attention. It was a call from a listener, asking about “pagan church traditions,” and why do we care anyway, that prompted my response.

Since many others will face similar situations, whether with family or simply as ‘watchmen’, here is a bit of that “open letter,” following my introduction.

Dear XXX and YYY,

While you seem to understand about the pagan origins of Xmas and the Ishtar/Easter, including Jeremiah 10, unfortunately, you fired off a .22 round with your response about WHY we must reject pagan tradition, when Scripture is full of heavy artillery.  Do you think the Father might be just a LITTLE disgusted to have what is arguably the Most Important Event in human history re-named after a pagan goddess?   He tells us, over and over again, how He HATES idolatry. And Bible history shows us why: we are STILL exile for that rebellion.

See the following:

Deuteronomy chapter 7 (esp. vv. 25-26, the end).
Deuteronomy chapter 12.
And Deuteronomy chapter 13, where He makes it SO clear that those who entice us (be they priests, pastors, or popes) to follow “other gods” are NOT His!  When He tells us “not to learn the ways” of the pagans, or to do the things they do and call it “worship” of Him, He is blunt.  And unequivocal.   We are to hate those idols (Xmas trees, Ishtar eggs died in the blood of sacrificed children, and so on).
“The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.”

Don’t even bring such an abomination into your house:
Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.                             (Deut. 7:25-26)

And note this, too — the penalty for such idolatry is (among other things) – plagues.  Deuteronomy 28:60-61 even warns that not ONLY will He “bring back the plagues of Egypt” – but OTHER ones, too, even new ones NOT Written in this Book!  I can’t help but think they might even be patented, like Ebola.

That’s obviously just a start.  The bottom line is that we are commanded (Deut. 4:2, Deut 12:32, and the “very last command in the Book” at the end of Revelation) not to “add to” or “subtract from” what is Written.  Yahushua railed at the “hypocrites” of His day (Scribes and Pharisees, etc) for doing exactly what the ‘church’ has been doing ever since! The reason this doesn’t get ‘preached’ is not ONLY that the 501c(3) Whore Church serves “another Jesus, whom we have not preached.”   It’s that they teach that His “law” has been “done away with” – and that’s an even Bigger Lie.

Think of it this way.  If we live in a world which believes that the Creator of the Universe can’t make up His mind, and “did away with” His own Written Law (when He said otherwise, in places like Matthew 5:17-19) —
why would we believe the Constitution, or
ANY law of mere men, would fare any better?

Finally – who is the ‘creator’ of a licensed “church”?   Hint:  Look at the certificate of incorporation; it will tell you.  And it isn’t YHVH, Elohim of the Bible – although it was supposed to be.  The old common law saying is, “if you take the king’s money, you play the kings’ tune.”  Yahushua the Meshiach said, after asking “
whose image and inscription?” that we are to “render unto Caesar what is his.”  Can you begin to see how not ONLY is the fake god of the ‘almighty state’ legally correct in requiring ITS creation to say “how high” when he says ‘jump’, but also that THROUGHOUT Scripture our True Creator and King has warned us OVER and over again NOT to fall into that trap!

“No one can serve two masters, he will love one and hate the other.”

In legaleze [sic] the term is “by agreement,”  meaning, ‘by contract’, and as a consequence of entering into ‘commerce.’  With a little thought, it becomes apparent why we are so rapidly headed to a place where “no one will buy or sell  [again, commerce]” without a “mark“.

EVERYTHING* that is being done to us (just as in Nazi Germany) is being done “legally”.   In the Bible, the story that applies most obviously is Jacob and Esau, who “traded his birthright for a cup of pottage.”  (And, note, “Jacob I have loved, Esau I hated,” says YHVH.)  Ben Franklin warned that “those who would trade essential liberty for a little temporary security deserve neither.”  And we’re there.

On briefly to marriage, His as opposed to the ‘almight state’.

Amerika (with a K) has been licensing “marriage” since essentially the New Deal.  (The history is sordid, and dates to “intermarriage” licensing.  Now that all of Caesar’s sheeple have been made again into slaves, the concept has been extended.)   Again, it’s “by agreement” — NOWHERE in the Constitution is the power (Art. 1, Sec 7,8, etc) to say ANYTHING about marriage or family delegated to the central government.  YHVH the Creator defined marriage, and for man to attempt to redefine His Word is yet another indicator of what is going on; the state plays god.

The key thing to observe is that NOWHERE, not once, in all of the Bible does a “man of God” ask permission of ANYONE but the Father (or fathers, his own and his isha-to-be) to marry.  Not one of His people – from Adam, to Abraham, to Moses and so on – ever goes to a king, pope, priest, pretender, or civil magistrate to ask for permission to do what He ordains.  BUT — if you DO ask permission, and enter into contract before “another master” — beware the fine print!   (It’s called “adherent contracts” in legalese.  Ask “child protective services” whose children the village really owns.)

The same thing goes for “gay” marriage.  Once you begin to ask permission from “another master” to do that which YHVH forbids, why are we surprised to see good called “evil,” and evil, “good”?   There’s much more**  — but perhaps you begin to see the point.  YHVH Himself, and what He ordains, has been rejected — both by the Almighty State and its licensed “church”.

Finally, see the end of the Book of Isaiah, chapter 66.  It has never been more clear:

…Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose
that in which I delighted not.
” (Isaiah 66:3-4)

——————————-

* for now.  We’re getting to the point that I talk about as well, where the “two P’s” of PRESUMPTION and PRECEDENT will allow Big Brother to dispense entirely with even the pretense of “agreement”.

Most of us now know Christians who are becoming concerned about the contradictions between what they have been TOLD Scripture says, and what is actually Written. So now is the time to be ready to “give an answer to every man that asketh you,” a reason for the understanding we have, and the “hope that is in you.”

Mark Call – Parsha “Ha’azinu” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha Ki Tetze – and how the Bible is NOT “politically-correct”

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014

Join Mark Call for two related, but different looks at this week’s Torah portion, Ki Tetze, from Deuteronomy 21:10 through 25:19. This week’s discussion also comes with another warning — not only is the material associated with marriage, covenant, adultery, divorce, and a number of other issues at the ‘adult’ level, but it is among some of the most politically-incorrect in Scripture. Is it the ‘traditions of man’ that matter, or are we willing to read Scripture as Written?

The first recording is the regular Erev Shabbat teaching, from the Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship, and is again an overview of the entire parsha:

SSM Ki Tetze 2014

The longer teaching from Shabbat concentrates on some of those politically-incorrect, and therefore not only overlooked but often simply distorted aspects of the Bible, as well as the connections to why ‘modern society’ is the mess that it is.

What fellowship have Torah-observant Believers with Xtianity?

Friday, August 8th, 2014

Recently a friend, who is still not QUITE convinced about all aspects of trying to walk in obedience to “Torah as Written,”  asked me a somewhat blunt question:  “Why are you so hard on the evangelical church?”

It’s probably true.  I often refer to paganized “holi-days” like Ishtar sun-god day and Xmas when I am teaching on the Sabbath, or observe that there are many verses in the “New Testament” which are all-too-often twisted.  Romans 13, of course, and there’s “Peter’s Dream” in Acts 10, which does NOT prove that “Jesus Christ died on the cross so we can all now eat ham sandwiches,” as well as the four “necessary but not sufficient conditions” from Acts 15:20-21, and literally scores of others.  “Not all Christian denominations,” I was reminded, teach the lie that the “law was nailed to the cross.”

And that’s a good point.  I certainly try not to lump all Christian denominations into the basket I tend to call “Xtianity.”  Some are starting to return to at least acknowledging that the Feasts of YHVH might still have something to teach us.  Some are questioning the pervasive “Rapture Cult” message that we’re going to get beamed out of here before anything REALLY bad can happen.  (Perhaps, though, because it’s getting harder to deny that bad things ARE happening already!)   Quite a few more are beginning to examine prophecy — even “Old Testament” prophecy — as ask questions like, “are we entering the End Times?”   (Although, in fairness, many have been predicting dates on that score for centuries, too.)

But the vast majority of the licensed, tax-exempt, 501c(3), “Caesar-created faith-based corporate institutions of another god,” still tend to ignore far too much of what the Messiah they claim to acknowledge as “Lord” said.  Things like that He would not change ANY of His instruction (torah) so long as heaven and earth still exist, or that “many” who practice torah-less-ness would come to hear Him say, “depart from Me, you who practice iniquity, I never knew you.”

“Fine,” I heard in response.  But the subsequent exchange boiled down pretty much to a reminder that, “you can catch more flies with honey,” than vinegar.  And that leads me to the real point of this article.  When we talk with people, particularly friends and loved ones, whom we KNOW, one-on-one — we must of course be sensitive to individual concerns, and engage in a discussion, where, hopefully, “iron sharpens iron.”  The value of personal discussion is just that — listening, quoting Scripture, responding to concerns, or misunderstandings, even prejudices, in a productive way.    But when it comes to a teaching in front of a fellowship gathering, or on the radio, or even in an article like this, things are a bit different.  While people can, and do, respond with questions or comments, the audience is often more “general.”  It usually includes people who ARE searching for more, and have come to realize that we have all, “inherited lies from our fathers.”   And — here is the real issue — there comes a time, warns Scripture repeatedly, when we must ACT:  to “blow the shofar,” because we recognize there’s a “sword coming upon the land,” or “come out of her,” because we can likewise see the plagues at hand.  And, ultimately, those who fail to “know the times and the seasons,” will end up being “without excuse.”

Why am I often so hard on the evangelical ‘church’?  For the same reason that Eliyahu (Elijah) was.  And Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, and Isaiah.  And Moses was.  And Yahushua was.  Because it’s a matter of literally “life and death,” or blessing and cursing, and time draws short.  Many WILL die.  And many ARE being “led astray” by wolves masquerading as shepherds.

Shaul, or Paul, put it this way.  (2 Cor. 6:14-17) “…what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”  Just exactly who is he talking about being “unequally yoked” with?

The answer can be found in the repeated prohibition of mixing: of the clean and the unclean; of the qadosh, or “holy”, and the profane; and even of things like wool and linen garments, crops in a field, or different types of animals to a plow.  Most importantly, we are not to mix the worship of YHVH with the types of things pagans did — and still do! —  for their false “gods.”  From the infamous golden calf, to Baal, and Molech, and Ishtar/Astaroth/Astarte/Easter, to Xmas trees, the winter solstice, Mithras’ December 25th birthday, and Halloween, to mix what our Creator specifies that He wants with pagan traditions is not only expressly forbidden, but called “abomination.”

Shaul’s Second letter to the people of Corinth still seeking to “come out of” paganism goes on to make it so clear — IF we can rid ourselves of the “Xtian baggage” we often still carry:

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?
for ye are the temple of the living Elohim…          (Are we really, if we commit idolatry before Him?)

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith YHVH, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you…”

Ultimately, if we are to do as he sought to do, to “speak boldly, as I ought to speak,” then we must confront idolatry, EVEN within the ‘evangelical church,’ exactly as Scripture confirms.  And perhaps ESPECIALLY with ‘the church’!  The last lines of Deuteronomy chapter 7 are unequivocal.  We are not even to “bring an abomination into [our] house!”  And the reason why is equally clear…”lest [we] be a cursed thing like” those idols He abhors.

If we love Him (John 14:15), He says we should keep His commands.  And if we love our brothers, we’ll speak His truth boldly.    Even if it sounds hard.

The Romans 13 Twisting

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

There is one particularly pernicious “twisting” of Scripture that probably tends to turn up in “Sunday Churchianity” more than any other. When Kefa (aka “Simon Peter”) wrote in the second letter that bears his name (II Peter 3:15-16) that “in the writings of our beloved brother” Shaul or Paul are many things that are “wrested” or “twisted…by the unlearned and untaught,” he may already have had a vision of what a paganized, co-opted church would do to Romans chapter 13 in just a millenium or two.

Here is the standard, “Authorized” English rendering of the “letter to the Romans”, verses 1 and 2. Unfortunately, there is so much historic and translation-bias “baggage” in the way that passage is rendered, AND TAUGHT, that the worst “twisting” Peter warned about has already happened:

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

For this reason, the Modern, Politically-Correct, 501c(3) State-Church Approved, Officially-Authorized Version of that verse (arguably it’s about the ONLY verse that still even HAS Washington’s Stamp of Approval) pretty much boils down to, “when Big Brother says ‘JUMP’, you must say, ‘How high, master?’ “.

The trouble is, that popular “teaching” – that to obey the State is to obey God – is just plain WRONG, and antithetical to the message of the rest of Scripture. Especially when the state tries to pretend that it IS “god”, or “another master,” imbued with the power to overwrite not only His Written Word, but its own “supreme law” by imperial edict anyway.

Why? Isn’t that a bit of hyperbole? At least, unless the State tries to require people to commit acts that directly violate Scripture.

You mean – like murder? Theft? Dishonest weights and measures? Subsidizing what He calls “abomination,” and calling it ‘licensed marriage’? Leaving aside the obvious objections, like just “in Whose Name” do we claim to be working, anyway? And, Who do we truly serve? Caesar, or YHVH? There’s a big difference between walking in obedience to the REAL King, Creator, and Elohim of Scripture, and those false self-proclaimed “gods” who would like to take His place. While YHVH may allow bad kings, conquerors like a Nebuchadnezzar, or even a “Beast” government to chasten those who walk in rebellion to Him, it is always clear that His “remnant” must have discernment.

Paul ALSO said, and it was in that very same letter to the Romans (v 6:16), well before those troublesome Most Twisted Verses, to be very careful just WHO you “submit yourself” as a servant to obey. For, “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

It would seem that, just as Scripture emphasizes consistently throughout, that we have a CHOICE about Whom we obey, Whom we worship, Whom we serve. Paul is hardly contradicting himself, or his heavenly Master. Note that in the well-known “spiritual battle” line from the same author’s letter to the Ephesians, Shaul uses the same word to describe those we fight, or wrestle, AGAINST:

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powersG1849 against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Furthermore, remember that several apostles were among those who were arrested and jailed for FAILING to obey those “higher powers” that were “ordained of God.” Something is wrong with the claim here. Check out the story in Acts chapter 5. Following their arrest for “resisting the power,” rather than, “receiv[ing] to themselves damnation,” they were freed by an “angel of the Lord.” When confronted directly for their very un-Romans-13-like behavior, “Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”

And Scripture is replete with other examples of men – and women – of God who did not submit to some “higher power,” whether in the form of a state, or its priests. Particularly a pagan state that saw itself as ‘god’. The Hebrew midwives in Egypt, commanded by Pharoah to kill male babies, “feared God,” disobeyed the king, and, “therefore God dealt well with them.” They were even rewarded with “households.” Young David did not allow King Saul to do to him what that “higher power,” unquestionably ordained by the Almighty, would have wanted to do to him, either. Indeed, the litany of kings who “did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD” alone should prove that the “Clergy Response Team” twisting of Romans 13 sounds more like something they would have written than YHVH Himself.

The context, consistency, and totality of Scripture reveal the lie. But there’s another way to debunk the Caesar-Approved Spin on Romans 13. Just look even briefly at the language. Even in the Greek rendering of the original letter, the key word in the verses is “exousia”, repeated several times. The primary Strong’s definition (Number G1849) says it means “power of choice,” or “liberty” of “doing as one pleases.” Other verses use the word to indicate “authority,” but the context makes clear that such authority can be used either for good, in the service of YHVH, or for evil, as in the “power of darkness.”

In I Cor. 8:9, the same word ‘exousia’ is rendered this way:

But take heed lest by any means this liberty G1849 of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

Like all power, authority, and liberty – there is a way to use that “exousia” in accord with the Word, in accord with the will of YHVH, and another way which is in opposition to Him. To “rightly divide the Word,” includes understanding that proper context!

Let’s try it THIS way, and see if the apparent meaning changes any:

Let every soul be subject unto the higher liberties. For there is no liberty but of God: the liberties that be are ordained of God.

Whosoever therefore resisteth the liberty, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

It certainly seems to put a whole different spin on the text, doesn’t it?

Whether the text is talking about “power” OR “liberty” – the key point remains. Whether for good, or for evil, it’s all about Who we serve.

Legal standards in the Bible

This week’s Torah portion, entitled “Chayei Sarah,” or “The life of Sarah”  is really about a whole lot of important legal issues, which formed the basis for British and American “common law” – back when we HAD “law”.

From contracts, to “agency” and the concept of “power of attorney”, to why no man of Yah in Scripture EVER got a “marriage license” – this is the first major detailed outline of real Law in Scripture:

Cleaning house: Pesach vs Easter

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

The “Spring Feasts” of YHVH occur at this time of year, beginning with the time of Pesach, or Passover, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.  Most people are aware of the command that we are to eat no leavened bread during that week, and are told (Exodus 12:15, 19, etc) to get the leaven (or “chametz”, in the Hebrew) completely OUT of our houses.

The metaphor which connects yeast or “chametz” with sin is also probably familiar to most readers here.  Yeast, like sin, can literally be a “growing” thing, which takes root in our houses, and spreads — almost like a cancer.  Indeed, “a little leavens the whole lump” (Galatians 5:9, 1 Cor 5:6, and the MANY references of Yahushua to the “leaven of the Pharisees”).  Pesach is the historic time for “spring cleaning”, and getting the ‘sin’ out of our houses, in preparation for the dramatic events to follow.

But there is more to it!

Much of the symbolism of the Passover has to do with marriage, and with both the promise of the Covenant, and the abomination  of idolatry, or literal spiritual adultery.  It is the imagery of unfaithful wives who are called ‘whores’ (like both the northern kingdom of Israel, and the southern kingdom of Judah were, and for which they were sent again into exile and bondage) because they went after other gods.  Time and again, “treacherous Judah” and “backsliding Israel”  (see Jeremiah 3) both committed idolatry, then failed to “return unto Me with her whole heart.

But it is also about reconciliation, and the promise of renewal of ‘right relationship’ with YHVH — if ONLY we will t’shuvah (“turn around”, or repent) and RETURN to Him.

Pesach is also a time of spiritual conflict, between the worship of YHVH, as He specifies, and the “prince of this world”, who has sought to pervert what is Written since the Garden of Eden by ‘twisting’ — sometimes just a little bit, and then later by a lot.  It is why Scripture so clearly forbids “adding to” and “subtracting from” His Word, and warns so clearly against attempting to “honor” Yah in the ways of pagan ‘gods’ (Deuteronomy 12:30-32, among many).

I realize that drawing any distinction between the Passover of our Creator* and the pagan aspects of what has become “Easter” can be a very difficult topic, and a source of strife and division.  I have no doubt that this is exactly what the Adversary intended.  But, if we are to “speak His Truth boldly” — as we ought to, is it something which must be addressed.

It takes only a very cursory study of pagan goddess worship to realize that “Easter” and the vast majority of the “cute harmless traditions” that surround it are exactly what our Creator so explicitly forbade, especially when it comes to “mixing” the clean and the unclean, the ”holy” or set-apart to Him, and the profane.  Not only are eggs, bunnies, and east-facing ‘sunrise services’ all explicitly pagan fertility rites, but the real story of those “harmless traditions” is even more heinous.  Can there be a more severe indictment of Constantinian “Xtianity” than the realization that not ONLY has the most important event in all human history been co-opted in direct rebellion to YHVH, but that the Appointed times of Yah which He repeatedly commanded we keep “forever”  have been changed, and even His very NAME has been expunged — to be replaced by a false pagan goddess (Ishtar, Astarte, Ashteroth, Oestre, “Easter”).

No wonder He Wrote through His prophet such a graphic description of His wrath about exactly what evil was done then, and is again being done now, in Ezekiel chapters 8 and 9.  Read it for yourself, and observe that everything from the sunrise service to Lent (the forty days of “women weeping for Tammuz”) are referred to as “abominations” — and that the death sentence He specifies will “begin at My sanctuary“.

The story points out that there are nevertheless still people who “sigh and cry at the abominations” being done by those who profess to honor Him.  They will receive His mark, and be separated and spared at the time of vengeance.  The lesson is unmistakeable.  And there truly IS, “nothing new under the sun.”

A columnist I admire frequently refers to the concept of “negative learning”, as is now widely taught in what pass for ‘schools’ in much of the world today.  The “negative knowledge” which results is in fact worse than ignorance, because it is simply WRONG, and thus harmful, and in that it must first be UN-learned before the poor student can even get back to zero.  Only then can real, POSITIVE learning again commence.

Unfortunately, this is what much of modern “Churchianity” amounts to — not just things which are in error, but often so WRONG that they must be UN-learned before those who have been so deceived by popes, priests, pharisees, and parasites can even get back to zero.   The ‘baggage’ of tradition which is literally hateful to our Creator, and which Yahushua so consistently condemned, must be unlearned in many cases, and eliminated from our house, before we can return to Him, and learn to “worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

Paganism is a poison.  It is a sin which YHVH forbids in the most explicit way possible.  And, like leaven, it can infect a house.  It can grow like cancer.
Whether we like it or not, such imagery is an abomination, and must be removed from our house, and our lives:

Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: [but] thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it [is] a cursed thing.     (Deuteronomy 7:25-26)

We must get rid of the ‘chametz’ – get rid of the toxic leaven – and get the pagan traditions OUT of our house.

Thankfully, He has already made provision for our failure, and has even borne our guilt.  “‘Return to Me’, says YHVH…Return, O backsliding children, and I will heal your backsliding…for truly in YHVH Elohekah is the Salvation of Israel.”     (Yermeyahu/Jeremiah 3:22-4:1)

*  Note, of course, that YHVH does not call it the “Passover of the Jews”, but in fact, always “MY feasts”, and “MY Appointed Time!”

Bo!

I have perhaps been remiss at posting links to the many audio teachings, news shows, and podcasts that I do each week, largely because I tend to assume that by now most regular listeners and readers will be familiar with where they can be found and downloaded.

(The ‘Audio:  Radio Shows’ page link at the upper right corner of the webpage gives those details.)

The most recent Torah portion (or “parsha”) for this week should be of special interest, however.  Both Jeff Gilbert and I consider “Bo”  (from Exodus chapters 10 through 13) to be one of the most critical in Scripture to understanding the rest.  And in this week’s recording, we both focused on very different, but very much related, aspects of the lesson Scripture has for us — not only in terms of what lies “way ahead”, but what is unfolding now.

Take a listen here:
