{"id":2352,"date":"2021-11-07T06:40:07","date_gmt":"2021-11-07T13:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markniwot.com\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2021-11-07T06:40:07","modified_gmt":"2021-11-07T13:40:07","slug":"parsha-toldot-teaching-from-shabbat-shalom-mesa-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markniwot.com\/?p=2352","title":{"rendered":"Parsha \u201cToldot\u201d teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When it comes to understanding what has gone so HIDEOUSLY wrong wrong in the world today, and especially what was once arguably &#8220;one nation under God,&#8221; to a place where &#8220;two nations struggle&#8221; &#8212; and may in fact be about ready for open civil war &#8212;<br>Mark will suggest that parsha Toldot this week (Genesis\/Bereshiet 25:19-28:9) may be just about as illustrative as it gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Erev Shabbat overview of the portion begins with &#8216;generations of Yitzak,&#8217; but only just barely, which plot really seems to thicken with Rivkah\/Rebecca&#8217;s vision that &#8220;two nations&#8221; were struggling within her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the story of how Yakov was moved to lie to his father, and impersonate Esau is, perhaps to put it mildly, &#8220;problematic,&#8221; and arguably ambiguous:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/hebrewnation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/06144127\/SSM-11-5-21-Toldot-teaching-podcast-xx.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Sabbath Day teaching, Mark turns directly to those &#8216;problem aspects,&#8217; and the question of whether these stories are ambiguous, or not, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does it mean to &#8220;despise&#8221; our birthright? (And are we seeing that all over again?) And how about deception?
