{"id":2696,"date":"2024-04-07T07:29:52","date_gmt":"2024-04-07T13:29:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markniwot.com\/?p=2696"},"modified":"2024-04-07T07:29:52","modified_gmt":"2024-04-07T13:29:52","slug":"parsha-shmini-teaching-from-shabbat-shalom-mesa-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/markniwot.com\/?p=2696","title":{"rendered":"Parsha \u201cShmini\u201d teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Parsha &#8220;Shmini&#8221; (Leviticus chapters 9 through 11) appears to be an unusual combination. It begins on the &#8216;eighth day,&#8217; with the climax of the consecration of the priests, Aaron and his sons, and only appears to end when &#8220;there came forth fire from before YHVH.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those same words frame the tragedy of the death of his sons Nadab and Abihu when they offer &#8220;strange fire,&#8221; which &#8211; clearly most importantly &#8211; He did NOT command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why, then, does He talk about <em>food <\/em>next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Erev Shabbat reading sets the stage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/hebrewnationonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/SSM-4-5-24-Shmini-teaching-podcast-xx.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And the confluence of those events set up the questions. What does &#8216;strange fire&#8217; even mean? And why did it merit sudden death?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship suggests that the story of Ezekiel chapters 8 and 9 offers some insight: What was it they &#8220;knew, or SHOULD have known?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is true that, &#8220;to whom much is given, much is expected.&#8221; And in Ezekiel 9:6, YHVH does tell the destroying angel to &#8220;begin at My sanctuary.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, wait &#8211; we don&#8217;t have a temple, or even a mishkan, any more. No priests, either, to hold to a higher standard. And any issues about &#8220;ritual purity&#8221; and food don&#8217;t fit any more, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe that&#8217;s another indicator.
