Parsha (Tetzaveh, Exodus 27:20 – 30:10) is yet another departure from not just the main ‘storyline’ of Exodus, but – MAYBE – even what we might have thought was a theme of Scripture: appearances can be deceptive, what we hear is more important than what we see, or similar things we’ve probably heard.
On Erev Shabbat, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa admits some of that, and maybe even why this might be a difficult lesson. Do clothes really “make the man”? Still though, there IS a whole lot of detail in this parsha, and there is undoubtedly something important to be learned when He says these garments are “for splendor and for beauty.”
During the Sabbath day study, Mark takes a look at those apparent contradictions. Is this splendid clothing for the annointed High Priest ‘merely ‘superficial? Clearly not, or why would He put so much emphasis on it? And, yes, like it or not, we DO tend to “judge by appearances”. So, the bigger question seems to be, is it ONLY that?
