Parsha “Ha’azinu & Yom Kippur”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa”

Sunday, September 23rd, 2018

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for the message in the Torah portion for this week (“Ha’azinu”, Deuteronomy chapter 32) as well as a look at some of the special readings associated with the most set-apart day of Yom Kippur.

Deuteronomy 32 is an elegant, and concise, summary of what Moshe sang to those who were about to enter the Promised Land. It’s also an elegant, concise warning that is every bit as vital to understand today, in such as time as this, as it was thousands of years ago.

The Erev Shabbat overview teaching of the entire parsha includes not only the second, and final “Song of Moses,” but also a look at Isaiah 57:14 – 58:14, and the final few verses of the Book of the prophet Micah.

This final “Song of Moses” has been correctly described as a concise capsule summary of the consistent theme of the entire Scripture. Perhaps more so, suggests Mark, it’s a mini ‘guided tour’ of Amerika 2018, if not the whole fallen world.

But it’s also apropos in this season to take another look at the story of Jonah. There’s more to it than just a whale, and perhaps it’s the contrast with Ninevah then and the DC Swamp NOW that will really clarify what Moses was warning about!

“Ha’azinu”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Sunday, September 24th, 2017

Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa the next-to-last parsha in the annual Torah cycle this week, “Ha’azinu”, from Deuteronomy chapter 32; aka the second and final “Song of Moses”.

The Erev Shabbat overview teaching begins by invoking those SAME two witnesses – heaven and earth – that are STILL around, and still witness that His Instruction has NOT changed. And there’s a warning in here, too, that should sound familiar, even repetitive, but perhaps it’s repeated because it’s still all too often ignored.

The Sabbath Day teaching is a look at THE ‘question’ some folks have been asking for months – “do you believe the September 23 end-of-the-world ‘sign’??”

And yet here we are in the beginning of the Fall Feasts – the Moedim of YHVH we have been told to remember and do, as best we can, here in exile – forever. Which ‘signs’ are we going to pay attention to? And do we know the times and the seasons anyway?

Ha’azinu — the REAL signs to watch!

The Sabbath Day teaching ties together the two songs this week, from Moses in Deuteronomy 32, and of King David in II Samuel 22, and the “cusp” at which we stand today:
