Parsha “Ki Tisa” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa Fellowship for a two-part look at parsha Ki Tisa (Exodus 30:11 through chapter 34) and one of the most”drama-filled” stories in the entire Book. Not to mention ‘fateful,’ and certainly ‘prophetic.’

On Erev Shabbat, Mark summarizes the storyline, and some of the most ‘revealing’ – albeit equally OVERLOOKED – elements of it, which all help explain just WHY this one is sometimes handled with the sunday skool equivalent of ‘kid gloves’. Even though there is at least one “flashing Neon Sign” in there…

During the Sabbath day study, Mark takes a more sober, direct, even blunt look at that part of the “Why?” behind the ‘golden calf’ — and also the ‘why?’ behind the Lies that it obscures.

Given the ‘times and the seasons,’ isn’t it about time to drop the pretense that people doing things that the story of the ‘golden calf’ – and so many OTHER admonitions in Scripture AND history – prove will get them cursed, enslaved, destroyed, and outright killed are, at best, ‘fools’? But there’s far more to it now than that.

“Ki Tisa: Is it ‘Fool’? Downright Stoopid? Or ‘Stiff-Necked’? “

Parsha “Tetzaveh” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha (Tetzaveh, Exodus 27:20 – 30:10) is yet another departure from not just the main ‘storyline’ of Exodus, but – MAYBE – even what we might have thought was a theme of Scripture: appearances can be deceptive, what we hear is more important than what we see, or similar things we’ve probably heard.

On Erev Shabbat, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa admits some of that, and maybe even why this might be a difficult lesson. Do clothes really “make the man”? Still though, there IS a whole lot of detail in this parsha, and there is undoubtedly something important to be learned when He says these garments are “for splendor and for beauty.”

During the Sabbath day study, Mark takes a look at those apparent contradictions. Is this splendid clothing for the annointed High Priest ‘merely ‘superficial? Clearly not, or why would He put so much emphasis on it? And, yes, like it or not, we DO tend to “judge by appearances”. So, the bigger question seems to be, is it ONLY that?

Parsha “Terumah” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

After the story of the Pharaoh, the plagues, and the Exodus from Egypt, followed by commandments and mishpatim, this week’s parsha (Terumah, Exodus chapters 25 through 27:19) is quite a departure.

While Moses is still up on the mountain, he is told to take a terumah, offering, from all of those whose hearts make them willing. And gets a lot of information about how it is to be used.

On Erev Shabbat, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa goes into that, and perhaps even a bit of the ‘why’ — given that this happens before the failure of the ‘golden calf’:

During the Sabbath day study, Mark addresses some of the challenges we might have in studying a set of detailed instructions such as these. Is it a lot of repetition, ‘boring’ even? Why does the Creator spend so much effort giving us so much information that might even seem a bit redundant at times?

Is it possible, undeniable even, that He might intend to make a point – or even MANY points – in a way that we might just tend to gloss over?

Perhaps the answer has to do with the very idea of a “willing heart”, and the concept of ‘terumah’ itself.

One thing is certain – there is FAR MORE here than just:

Parsha “Mishpatim” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This parsha is aptly named. “Mishpatim” (Exodus chapters 21 through 24) contains more mishpatim – judgments, or ordinances, 53 by most counts – than any other portion in the Torah.

Immediately on the heels of the Ten Debarim [Commandments, or even Sayings] the Torah outlines what Mark suggests is an interesting contrast, but hardly a coincidence: After YHVH brought ‘kol Israel’ out of bondage by His mighty hand, and then gives them instruction about how to live FREE, the next item on the agenda is slavery – actually, bondservice; not the kind of slavery they had seen at all. But still, the contrast sends a message.

On Erev Shabbat, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa goes into that, and more:

This parsha is just simply SO ‘NOT PC’. And the simple fact that SO many things that the Creator of the Universe and Author of Scripture says we should do are now turned on their head and that so many people, even the so-called ‘church,’ won’t honestly even discuss, tells us not only just how SICK this society is, but WHY.

During the Sabbath day ‘in-depth’ study, Mark starts right there. Again, it should be clear that men seem to think they know better than God what He SHOULD have Written instead – indeed, too many people who ‘inherited lies’ in sun-god-day school don’t even KNOW much of what is in this portion! – so there’s a challenge in this one:

Gauge your own emotional reaction. How much ‘anti-YHVH’, anti-Scripture programming can you sense during this presentation?

If this one doesn’t set your hair on fire, you’ll want to download it and listen again. Even dare some friends or relatives still drinkin’ the Whore Church Kool-Aid to. But, most importantly, do as Mark reminds us the Bereans did: search out the Scriptures for yourself, discern, confirm, and “see if these things be True.”

Parsha “Yitro” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

The Torah portion this week is perhaps one of the most ‘dramatic’ and central in all of the Torah, ‘Yitro,’ (Exodus chapters 18 through 20), named because it first mentions Yitro (aka ‘Jethro’, Moses’ father-in-law), but which also includes the first ‘mass download’ of the Ten “Debarim” — ‘words’, or ‘sayings’, from the Hebrew, but often called the Ten Commandments in English. Even if people like to argue about how to number them, or whether some of all even still apply.

And yet again, the first words of the first of all of them is “Anochi YHVH Eloheka!”.

On Erev Shabbat, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa goes into that, and more:

During the Sabbath day ‘more-in-depth’ study, Mark can’t help but note that there’s without question something VERY vital in this parsha — even if too many men who think they know what “God SHOULD have Written instead” would prefer to tickle the ears of gullible people with ‘unsound doctrine’ — but, at the same time, if we understand the times and the seasons, might get overlooked amid worries about mass genocide, empty store shelves, and World War 3.

Don’t make that mistake.

The Sabbath day teaching explains why.

Parsha “B’shalach” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week’s Torah portion begins immediately AFTER the ‘plagues of Egypt’, in parsha ‘B’shalach,’ (Exodus 13:17 through chapter 17), and includes one of the most famous miracles in the entire Book – the ‘parting of the Red Sea’ (OK, more accurately the Sea of Reeds).

Again, the bottom line for the signs, miracles, and plagues is “Ani YHVH!”. And this time there’s a specific instruction as a result — albeit one that the ‘whore church’ has ignored, often even lied about, for centuries.

On Erev Shabbat, as usual, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa goes through the whole story….

During the Sabbath day ‘more-in-depth’ study, Mark again returns to the concept of cycles, and what the specifics of THIS pattern might tell us about OTHER cycles, like the one of truly “Biblical proportions” that we are now in. But, WHERE? It is certainly interesting to look for prophetic parallels, and indications from accounts like this one to attempt to establish “where we are” on a timeline. No doubt there are some major differences in things that we can look at, such as levels of ‘faith,’ or obedience to Yah, or even more consistent patterns like human nature itself.

But the Sabbath day teaching this week definitely explores a slightly different, admittedly even “nerdy”, way to examine the problem.

We can look at patterns in TIME, such as ‘what happens when,’ and in what order, or we can look at them in other ways, such as, what happens over and over again, and how often. And even, which of those things might end up being so important, that some later observers, or the Messiah Himself might point them out as having special significance. If they repeat regularly, like every seven days, or at the same time each year, a nerd with an engineer’s perspective, like Mark, might even say we can talk about them in the ‘frequency domain.’

All the more reason to look very closely into what the story is teaching us. They saw the cloud – and the miracles – in person. But we have an advantage they did NOT.

Parsha “Bo” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week’s Torah portion completes the story specific to the plagues of Egypt, in parsha ‘Bo,’ (Exodus 10:1 through 13:16), and the basis for literally ‘the beginning of months’, and the time of Pesach.

Again, the bottom line for the signs, miracles, and plagues is “Ani YHVH!”. And this time there’s a specific instruction as a result — albeit one that the ‘whore church’ has ignored, often even lied about, for centuries.

On Erev Shabbat, as usual, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa goes through the whole story, picking up this time with the plague of locusts, and culminating with the ‘death of the firstborn’.

Be sure to ‘stay tuned’ for the Sabbath Day teaching, and “food for thought.” Often, we tend to look for prophetic parallels, and indications from accounts like this one to attempt to establish “where we are” on a timeline. And Mark has always been a big proponent of understanding cycles, and patterns.

But the Sabbath day teaching this week definitely explores a slightly different perspective. There are certainly things in this week’s plagues that suggest parallels. We have plagues of locusts, not only literal but certainly metaphoric. And that applies even more so to the kind of “darkness which may be FELT.”

Yet there are other major differences, too. Pharoah then did NOT want to “let the people go,” while today’s pharoah-equivalents seem intent on killing masses of them instead. And there’s certainly no candidate for a Moses-like contender to confront hard-hearted tyrants now like there was then, much less a general understanding of just Who is driving the narrative.

All the more reason to look very closely into what the story is teaching us.

Parsha “Vayera” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week’s Torah portion describes the first of the plagues of Egypt, in parsha ‘Vayera,’ (Exodus 6:2 through chapter 9).

And that word, ‘vayera,’ translated as “and I appeared” begins a verse that has been described as confusing, since it SEEMS to imply that Yahuah had NOT ‘made Himself known’ to the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, via that Name. But, in fact, He certainly did, as the text makes clear, more than once. So there must be another explanation; indeed, there are several possibilities, but Mark suggests that the one most clear is also the one that this Book is all about: “Ani YHVH!”:
it’s one thing to use a name, even Hi; it’s another entirely to make sure that all of humanity KNOWS what that Name is all about. By demonstration, by His ‘mighty arm,’ power, and strength. And more.

On Erev Shabbat, as usual, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa goes through the whole story, including so many of the fascinating patterns that underlie the sets of plagues:

The Sabbath day teaching this week is about the heart of the questions raised by what it means that “by my Name ‘Yahuah’ I did not – then – make Myself known to them…” but – in THIS part of the story, He certainly does. One of those questions is arguably, “well, then, what about NOW?” Many of those who claim to be “followers” or “believers” don’t seem to know what His Name even is, much less what “making His Name KNOWN — to US! — really implies.

But that’s just the beginning.

Parsha “Shemot” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week we begin the study of a new Book, and a new phase of the story, in parsha ‘Shemot,’ (Exodus 1:1 through 6:2).

And it begins with an evil ruler who fears people that seem stronger than he, and thus wants to enslave them, and who especially wants to kill all the male children. Does it sound familiar yet? Admittedly, evil tyrants today want to kill ALL the children, and particularly to emasculate the young boys, but it’s a pattern Scripture makes clear.

On Erev Shabbat, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa first covers the whole story, following the times of the original ‘sons of Israel’. The story gives us the first example in the Bible of very special women who DON’T believe the Whore Church rendering of Romans 13 (GIV, ‘Government-Inspired Version) — and, no doubt amazing to some, aren’t punished by an angry god for their disobedience. And it follows then the life of a young Moses, who begins a long process of becoming one of the central figures in Scripture.

But during the Sabbath day teaching this week, Mark takes a deeper look at the women in this first part of the story. Without them, there would have been no boy to grow up into Moshe.

The fact that this teaching emphasizes that part of the history, and is SO ‘politically incorrect’, is a big part of the reason why it is also SO important, and why a world that has made key elements of His Word SO ‘untouchable’ is such a stinkin’ mess. It’s also why the term “Covenant with Death” figures so prominently: Because it’s so True.

And THIS time, there is a ‘Bad Guy’. Actually, lots of ’em, and they serve the same master.

They’re not hiding it any more, either.

Parsha “Vayechi” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha ‘Vayechi,’ “And lived Yakov…” is the last one in the Book of Genesis, and concludes the lives of both Yakov, or Jacob, and later his son Yosef/Joseph (Genesis/Bereshiet 47:28 on). It’s also arguably the first of the “grafting in” stories of the ‘house of Israel,’ in the form of Yakov’s ‘adoption’ of Yosef’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh (or is it the other way around?) into the ‘twelve’ tribes — depending on how they are counted in context, of course.

And it sets the stage for the bondage to follow.

On Erev Shabbat, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa first covers the whole story, and some of those important nuances:

On first reading, this might be one of the few stories in the Bible where there is no obvious antagonist, or bad guy, much less a character that seems to represent ‘the Adversary,’ or outright evil. And yet, the word certainly appears, and there’s a setup for the next Book of Exodus that begs an important question: How did these sons of Israel descend so dramatically into bondage and slavery?

And, interestingly, it took about the same time for them as it did for America, since the Revolution for independence, to end up in another form of bondage.

Mark suggests that it hinges on a question that Jacob asks his son, apparently concerning his grandsons, but also for which he already knew the answer: “Whose are THESE?”

The Sabbath Day teaching suggests the question is about FAR more than meets the eye.
