Parsha “Vayechi”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa”

Sunday, December 23rd, 2018

Join Mark Call for a look at the final parsha in the Book of Bereshiet, or Genesis, “Vayechi,” (Genesis 47:27 – end), which completes the telling of the lives of the patriarchs, with the death of Yakov, aka Israel, his adoption of the two sons of Yosef, Ephraim and Manasseh into the ‘twelve tribes,’ and finally their prophetic blessing as well, setting the stage for the descent into slavery and the ultimate Exodus.

First, the Erev Shabbat review of the whole story:

The Sabbath Day teaching begins with what Mark suggests is the central theme of Israel’s “grafting in” of the two in-part foreign-born sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, in the reverse order of their birth.

The Sabbath Day teaching this week looks at the end of the Book of Genesis, the prophetic blessings of the sons of Yakov, and what might even be called “post-Genesis GAP theory” —
just how did they end up in that kind of bondage anyway?

And can we see how elements that resulted in the northern kingdom (divided Israel) both splitting from Judah, and then ending in bondage and exile, ought to look so incredibly familiar.

As the first Book ends, and the same remains true today, certain patterns still repeat, and are arguably more vital to understand than ever before in history.

The Sabbath Day teaching is entitled, “The Cycle Begins Again!”

The longer teaching from Shabbat takes off from the framework of the parsha into “uncharted territory”, perhaps even a bit more than usual!

Yes – there’s a lot going on as the world enters a new secular year. And perhaps the world’s focus on “unity” — even in light of prophecies that (like Ezekiel’s ‘two sticks’) point in that direction — is NOT the right answer for us today.
