Parsha “Vayera” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for a two-part look at parsha (Vayera, Gen/Bereshiet chapters 18 through 22) where some of the arguably most important events in the Torah play out, and then prefigure events that will again play out, even in the same place.

First, the Erev Shabbat overview of the entire portion:

The Sabbath Day teaching focuses on Abraham the prophet, and not only the man of faith.

Mark begins with a ‘quandry.’ Abraham’s “Binding of Isaac,” aka ‘the Akieda’ is often cited as the ultimate ‘proof text’ of faith. “Now I know,” said YHVH, that you fear Yah, and, “have not withheld your son, your only son from Me.” (Gen. 22:12) And yet, he can argue, it’s completely logical for Abraham to KNOW, with complete certainty, that the ‘son of promise’ is NOT going to die on that mountain – one way or another! – because the things Abraham by this point KNOWS of a CERTAINTY WILL HAPPEN, will come through him. In other words, what some call “human sacrifice” was never even a remote possibility; Abraham just didn’t know how He would accomplish the miracle he was certain would happen.

So, no wonder Abraham spoke with such certainty to his servants: “Ya’ll stay here a while; the lad and I are gonna go up yonder to worship, we’ll be back…”

Which leads to the central question for this week:

Yes, Abraham was certainly a consummate ‘man of faith’. He showed that many times. But after all, he had SPECIFIC PROMISES, right from the very mouth of Yahuah Almighty Himself.
But how ’bout us?

We certainly have specific promises, albeit conditional, in His Word. And they clearly apply to each of us. But NOT in the same sense that Abraham was able to KNOW that his son Yitzak – he just didn’t know exactly HOW! – was going to come back with him. After all, he had multitudes to father through the line of his seed.

We don’t have THOSE kind of ‘specifics’.

The answer, Mark suggests, has a lot to do with something ELSE we know about Abraham, but tend to overlook.

And it may even help us to move mountains. Or deal with what’s coming. After all, how else could we possibly do even “greater works than these”?

Parsha “Lekh Lecha” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for a two-part look at parsha (Lekh Lecha, Gen/Bereshiet chapters 12 through 17) where in this case we can hopefully say, “we’ve heard the PROMISES,” but, still, it’s the modern parallels that should certainly get our attention today.

First, the Erev Shabbat overview of the entire portion:

The Sabbath Day teaching focuses on Abram/Abraham the MAN, human and flawed, and the man of faith. And the fact that he ‘came out of” a pagan world, although, as Mark will suggest, perhaps not nearly so pagan as the world today.

Abram was told to “get out of there,” and leave the place he had lived, and most of his kin, and go to a place that he would be told later. No hotel reservations, no tour books, just go.

And yet today – we’ve all heard something like this – “I hate my job,” “this is a lousy place to raise kids,” and they even want to do all kinds of things to me and my family that I know just aren’t right.

There’s more of vital importance right now in this portion than you might even have thought.

Parsha “Noach” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

“…Noach was a tzadik. Noach was tamim [‘perfect’] in his generations. Noach walked with Elohim.” [Genesis/Bereshiet 6:9]

Does that mean his DNA was uncorrupted by the likes of ‘gene therapy’? Does it mean he was a pretty good guy, at least by the pitiful standards of a horribly corrupt world? Or is there more to it?

At least all of that sounds enough like what we see today to admit that HOWEVER it was in the ‘Days of Noah,” we’re certainly getting pretty close once again.

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for a two-part look at a parsha (Noach, Gen/Bereshiet 6:8 through chapter 11) where most of us can say “we’ve heard the story,” and we can probably see more than a few parallels today. Even so, there are some elements that have been called “ambiguous,” or worse, but which may REALLY help us “connect some dots” now that the level of the ‘wickedness of men’s hearts’ that we’re dealing with can no longer be denied.

First, the Erev Shabbat overview of the entire portion:

The Sabbath Day teaching is not only about some of those “ambiguities” and the questions that come along with them, but another theme as well that Mark suggests connects not only some of the ‘criticisms’ that have been directed at Noach (like: all that time, and he didn’t ‘save’ anybody else, so he wasn’t much of a leader”) but so many of the parallels we can’t ignore in our own “corrupt” era. Do we try to “save the world” that seems intent on self-destruction, or crawl into our own little “arks”? How can we ‘choose life’ in a world so intent on massive death?

Parsha “Bereshiet” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week the annual Torah cycle begins anew, from “in the beginning,” with Genesis, or Bereshiet 1. And, admittedly, this is one of the most “packed” parashot in the Bible, since it literally IS ‘the Foundation’ upon which the rest is built.

During the Erev Shabbat look, Mark attempts to explain why — among other things — this portion is a great ‘proof text’ for the fact that this is far more than even ‘merely’ a Creation Story, it literally sets up EVERYTHING that follows, in the Book, and in history:

So much of EVERYTHING that is wrong, and that is right, in the world today, has it’s ‘genesis’ right here. Certainly this reading has a lot to tell us about how we got where we are. But there’s also a theme here that cannot be overlooked in a world so filled with evil as we now see.

And it has to do with Authority – real, imagined, and usurped.

Sukkot teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This is a special set of teachings for the week of Sukkot.

The regular Torah portion for this Sabbath is Leviticus 22:26 through 23:44, which has to do with, among related things, this special time, and the fact that we are to observe it, “forever, throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places.”

Since this is a special week, and a very special time, the Sabbath day teaching for this week is more “free form” as well, and does a bit more “compare and contrast.”

Yom Kippur and Parsha “Ha’azinu” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa, way out in the very off-grid boondocks, for a special teaching of parsha Ha’azinu (Deuteronomy 32, a.k.a, the Second Song of Moses) and the day of Yom Kippur:

a day when we are commanded to do “no work” whatsoever.

And, this year, like never before in any of our lifetimes, that’s a clear study in contrasts!

Parsha “Vayelekh” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This parsha, Vayelekh (Deuteronomy chapter 31) is only one chapter, but reiterates several key points, from Kazakh! (Be Strong, and of Good Courage!) to a graphic reminder of the coming exile (still in progress…)

Here is the Erev Shabbat overview of the entire portion:

During the Sabbath day study, Mark first takes a closer look at the warning, now past-tense, about the historic exile for His people who literally “made void” His Covenant with them, and turned to idolatry.

But that prophecy leads directly to a question, that may fit our situation today even more than it did millennia ago:

“Vayelekh: Is His Face STILL Hidden?”

Parsha “Nitzavim” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This parsha, Nitzavim (Deuteronomy 29:10-30:20) is short, not quite even two chapters, but exceptionally concise, and contains what Mark suggests is one of the best “two-word summaries” of His Torah in the Bible: “Choose LIFE!”

Here is the Erev Shabbat overview of the entire portion:

This parsha is also one of the best ‘proof texts’ to debunk some of THE biggest lies in human history:
“the ‘Law’ has been done away with…” and “nailed to the cross.” And “NOBODY could POSSIBLY, EVER, keep THE LAW” (except, maybe, ‘another jesus whom we have not preached.’)

When it comes to things that are, TRULY, a matter of “life and death,” Mark doesn’t pull any punches.

While there are many second – and third – witnesses in Scripture to the fact, as well as the ‘how,’ and the ‘why,’ that His Word has been twisted for so many centuries to deny the Truth that the Messiah never changed His own Written Word — much less did away with any even tiny part of it! — this parsha is singularly undeniable.

Parsha “Ki Tavo” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for parsha Ki Tavo, Deuteronomy/Debarim 26:1 – 29:8.

The parsha begins with a description of the offering of Bikkurim, or “First Fruits,” and continues with specific curses for things done in secret, culminating with the second of two powerful statements in the Torah of the “blessings and cursings.”

And there is a notable symmetry to blessings, and the first of the cursings, which are essentially mirror images. But that is where the pattern appears to end, because the curses for rebellion to Him then continue, and go on, and on, and on. Which may explain why there is a decided tendency in ‘xtianity’ to pretend they were “done away with” anyway,

Here is the Erev Shabbat overview of the entire portion:

There is another interesting aspect to the presentation of both blessings and cursings in the Bible as well. Perhaps the most famous outline of blessings in the Book comes from the very first recorded public address by the Messiah, generally known as the ‘Sermon on the Mount,” from Matthew chapter 5, which begins with what are often called the “Beatitudes.”

In the Sabbath Day teaching, Mark points out that, just as is the pattern in Scripture that the blessings come first, Yahushua begins His ministry the same way, outlining blessings.

The curses, as He repeatedly outlines, are for explicit failure to ‘not serve Yahuah with joy…”
…almost like they have to be EARNED.

And can there be any doubt, by now, that they HAVE been?

Parsha “Ki Tetzi” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for parsha Ki Tetzi, Deuteronomy/Debarim 21:10 – 25:19.

There are a lot of ‘mitzvot’ in here. More interestingly, though, are just how many are downright “not PC” in a world prefers calling “evil,” good, to reading His Word, as Written.

Which is why understanding, and the admonition to “study, to show yourself approved…” is more vital now than ever.

Here is the Erev Shabbat overview of the entire portion:

The Sabbath Day teaching starts by asking a critical question: Just what does the fact that SO much of His Word is NOT ‘politically correct’ tell us? And is it therefore any wonder that a world so willfully ignorant is such a fetid stinking mess?

The devil seems to be in the details that are IGNORED.

Ki Tetzi: “There’s something about the NOT PC…”
