Parsha “Pinchas”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha Pinchas (Numbers 25:10-30:1) may be one of the most problematic stories in the Torah. Aaron’s grandson Pinchas (aka Phineas) killed two idolators ‘in the act’, and in the process saved countless lives from a plague that had already taken 24,000. And he was given the “Covenant of Peace” by Yahuah.

The Erev Shabbat introduction:

The haftorah portion this week outlines some of the final events in the career of the prophet Eliyahu (Elijah) and also has not only some interesting parallels, but a warning, the hard truth of which has long been ignored by both whoring houses, but has now come to a head, including another plague.

There is a sword coming upon the land. All of it. Worldwide. But you cannot blow a shofar wearing a muzzle. And you cannot walk in obedience, unless, like Pinchas, you are sure Who you serve.

Double Parsha “Chukat-Balak”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

By now, those of us who study Scripture should understand just how much what is Written still applies today. But when an unusual DOUBLE portion resonates SO dramatically with the real, literally “life and death” issues that shape the most significant conflicts in American history, AND corresponds even to the secular anniversary of the event that is almost certainly the MOST important societal AND spiritual event in history, too — it’s time to take notice.

The Erev Shabbat overview:

This double portion begins with the most famous example of a ‘chuk’ in the Torah, the preparation and purpose of the ‘red heiffer’. There’s the death of Miriam, more whining, and the double ‘rock-strike’ that cost Moshe and Aaron their entry into the Land, some famous battles, the bronze serpent on a pole, and finally the story of the ancient equivalent of a famous televangelist, Balam (or Bilaam), the guy that even had a talking donkey.

How all of this that seems to disparate somehow actually fits together, however, is downright amazing.

And there are parallels, uncomfortable as they may be, in what has been given to us, and what is being rejected today.

Parsha “Korach”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha “Korach” (Numbers chapters 16 through 18) is about what is probably the most famous – or infamous – ‘rebellion’ in Scripture. Which is part of the reason the lesson is oh-so-relevant today.

The Erev Shabbat overview:

Korach and those who rebelled against Moshe and Aaron’s leadership claimed to want to worship and serve Yahuah. Arguaby, power and self-aggrandizement were also imnportant to their motivation. And their fate still serves as a warning.

Yet there are parallels, and other elements which are utterly antithetical, in the worldwide rebellion in progress today.

Clearly there are both more “power hungry” wannabe tyrants at work today. But “serving God” isn’t part of their agenda. Well, unless one asks, “which?…”

Parsha “Shelach-Lekha”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha “Shelach-Lekha” (Numbers chapters 13 through 15) is sometimes thought of as the ‘story of the spies’. Mark sometimes refers to it as the ‘first recorded VOTE in human history as well,’ nothing that it went badly, and those who trusted Yahuah “lost”, 10-2.

Parsha “Beha’alotecha”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha “Beha’alotecha” (Numbers chapters 8 through 12) covers quite a wide range of topics, from the menorah and silver trumpets, and thus things like, “head ’em up, move ’em out”, to some elements that are considerably more “problematic.” The fact that they are still so apropos is what should resonate with us now.

The Erev Shabbat overview lays out the “what and why?”

Mark Call – Parsha “Naso and a bit more”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week, Mark Call completes the look at the last part of parsha “Naso” (Numbers chapter 7, in this case) and a look at what one of the most clearly “redundant” elements in the whole Torah, into this week’s two-part teaching.

The Erev Shabbat overview takes the repitition “head on,” not only with a bit of an ‘engineering perspective’ but a look at the bigger question, “Why?”

The Sabbath midrash picks up there. If those twelve princes of their tribes all managed to bring exactly the same offerings, each on their day, what does that really tell us. Today, we might use the term “groupthink” to describe people marching in unison. But it depends on Who they are following.

Parsha “Shavout – and a bit of Naso”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Chag S’meach!

This is another special week, since the regular Torah portion is — at least somewhat! — pre-empted by the final spring feast of Shavuot.

But because it turns out to be SO apropos anyway, Mark Call decided to incorporate at least SOME of parsha “Naso” (Numbers 4:21 through chapter 6, in this case) into this week’s two-part teaching.

The Erev Shabbat overview and “set-up” includes both the first couple of chapters of that parsha, along with some traditional readings from Exodus chapters 19 through 20 (the giving of the Torah and ‘Ten Debarim’ at Mount Sinai) as well, since that was at least the FIRST part of what happened during this time, so long ago.

The Sabbath midrash is not only about Shavuot, this final of the three Spring feasts [moedim], but how so much of what is happening RIGHT NOW in the biggest orchestrated global economic meltdown in history, but also the explicit destruction of most of “western civilization’ and the American republics as well, is literally about as much of a “proof” of the validity of Scripture as could be hoped for.

How do placebo masks, the ‘woman caught in adultery,’ and even the Book of Ruth manage to relate SO specifically to what happened in our history, and is now unfolding all around us, and more so than ever on this special day?

Parsha “Bemidbar”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha “Bemidbar” begins the new Book with the same name (“Nunbers” in the English, which is also quite descriptive!) with instructions that Yahuah gave to Moses b’midbar, or “In the wilderness” of Sinai.

It is also the first commanded “head count” in the Bible, and it’s interesting that the colloquial term is a better translation of the literal Hebrew (“lift up the head”) than the idea of merely taking a census.

There’s also an important implication in the way the text is structured that what is intended here (“by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of NAMES”) is far more than just treating the many individuals among the mixed multitude simply as ‘numbers’.

The Erev Shabbat overview covers the specifics:

The Sabbath midrash picks up with another question about the numbers themselves, and why Scripture gives us so much detail about them. And that, in turn, should really raise some eyebrows today (interesting how His Word resonates, even in ways we don’t necessarily expect!) — because it should help us to understand TRUST. Why it matters, and where we must put it!

Parsha “Behar– Bechukotai”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Double-Parsha “Behar-Bechukotai” (Leviticus chapter 25 through the end of the Book) begins with instructions that Yahuah gave to Moses “Behar Sinai,” or on Mount Sinai. They start with the “shemitta” year, or year of rest for the land on a seven-year cycle. And like so many other things that don’t SEEM to apply, now that we’re in exile after being kicked OUT of the land so many centuries ago, “for cause”, many of us have bought into the lie that all of such “old testament” stuff doesn’t matter anyway.

Which is arguably one of the reasons why we are still IN exile!

But there is far more, and it matters far more now than ever before in our history.

The Erev Shabbat overview covers the specifics:

The Sabbath midrash picks up with a question that has been asked frequently concerning the curses of Leviticus chapter 26, and Deuteronomy 28: WHY does Yah go into so much more graphic detail about the CURSES for rebellion to Him than He does the blessings?

The answer seems to be playing out RIGHT NOW, all around us, and perhaps as never before in history!

Parsha “Kedoshim – Emor”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

One more week, Mark combines a somewhat different than traditional pairing of Torah portions in the annual sequence, but, after all, the Biblical-scale global economic and social[ist] upheaval certainly marks “interesting times” that fit as well.

Parsha “Kedoshim” (Leviticus chapters 19 and 20) is literally about what that word means. “Y’all be ‘holy’, in the southern plural conjugation of the word into English, is outlined by the specifics. And the following parsha, “Emor” (Leviticus chapters 21 through 24) takes the next logical step, by outlining how those who are specifically, by birth and avocation, set apart to Yahuah, are held to a still-higher standard.

The Erev Shabbat overview covers the specifics:

SSM Kedoshim-Emor combined 5-8-20

The Sabbath midrash begins with the fundamental question: “What is ‘holiness’?” Given the Big Lie that most of us have been exposed to for far too long, from denial of what the Book actually says in the form of everyting from “over-spiritualization” to outright obfuscation, maybe it’s not surprising that the word ‘holy’ has become a riddle.
