Parsha “Miketz” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha “Miketz” (Genesis 41:1 – 44:17) continues the story, and the character development of Yosef, and at least sets the stage for that which sets Judah apart as well.

This time through the cycle, Mark Call takes a closer look at the ‘character issues’ outlined in the parsha. It’s clear that Yosef has matured in both “discernment” (‘bien’ in the original Hebrew) and “wisdom” (‘chakam’). But what should really resonate now is that he demonstrated what Pharoah recognized was needed in THAT time.

Today, at the onset of a different “time of trouble” — the same characteristics are vital. And we must not only develop them in ourselves, but be just as able to recognize them given what is ahead.

Parsha “Vayeshev” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha “Vayeshev” (Genesis chapters 37 through 40) begins by saying ‘these are the generations of Yakov, or Jacob, but it really starts with the story of Yosef, or Joseph.

In between, there’s a revealing “digression” (OK, actually an ‘atbash’) about Judah beginning to ‘man up,’ and a whole lot of hints about why the challenges they faced are still ever-so-relevant.

Over the weekend, the US no-longer-all-that supreme court rolled over for one of the biggest cop-outs in history, and set the stage for what might well be the final step leading to civil war, or perhaps even much worse. For that reason alone, the insight into personal challenges in the life of major figures in Scripture as they walked out what was so clearly ‘His plan’ must not be missed.

Will we recognize not only His hand at work, but His insruction?

Parsha “Vayishlach” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa Fellowship for the two-part study of the life of Yakov, or Jacob, as he now returns to the land, both of his birth AND the promise, for the long-awaited encounter with his brother, Esau.

Is he still murderously angry, two decades later? Is it “kill or be killed”?

Parsha “Vayetze” (Genesis chapters 32:3 through all of 36) addresses the issue of “brother against brother,” and the possibility of reconciliation, and restoration of ‘right relationship’. It’s also about faith, and promises, and even “how to pray”.

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa Fellowship for the two-part study of the life of Yakov, or Jacob, as he travels to Haran, which essentially begins the story of the twelve tribes.

Parsha “Vayetze” (Genesis chapters 28:10 through 32:3) finds Yakov staying ‘en route’ at “Beit El” for his first direct encounter with Yahuah, and hearing the promises directly, after which he continues to the house of Laban the Aramean.

There is again much in “Scripture as Written” that is no longer “PC,” and that again speaks volumes about what has become of this society. But the Sabbath Day teaching this week is more about some of the elements of the parsha that inspire questions. Why did Jacob weep when he first saw, and kissed, Rachel?

And what were the elements that helped him understand it was finally time to ‘return to the land of your birth,’ as commanded? He heard the command of YHVH directly; today, we have His Word and examples like Yakov that provide guidance in “such a time as this.”

Parsha “Toldot” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Toldot (Genesis 25:19 – 28:9) is a Torah portion that may, in contrast to those that preceded it, be one of the most ambiguous, even confusing, in the story of the patriarchs.

THe story of Isaac (Yitzak) and Rivkah (Rebecca) begins the parsha, where twins “struggle within her” after 20 childless years. The Shabbat (Friday evening) overview continues through Esau’s “selling his birthright for a cup of pottage,” a ‘like father, like son,’ period with Abimelech, and what seems like an oddly out-of-place interlude about strife and contention over wells, followed finally by perhaps the most concerning story in the sequence, where Yakov, whose legacy is considered to be synonymous with ’emet’, or truth, apparently lies to his father to usurp his older twin’s blessing as well.

What is perhaps most striking about parsha “Toldot,” after several weeks of stories that are SO clear, so foundational, even so unequivical, is how ambiguous this one SEEMS to be. Even some of the pieces don’t seem to fit. And how can such an at best ambiguous story about what might almost be called a disfunctional family teach us about “unsettled times” like these.

Ah, there. Maybe the pieces really DO all fit:

Mark Call –Parsha “Chayei Sarah” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa Fellowship for the two-part study of parsha “Chayei Sarah” (Genesis 23:1 – 25:18).

This is the Torah portion whose stories may set more “law precedent” than any other in Scripture.

The Erev Shabbat (Friday evening) overview and intro begins with the first recorded land contract in human history. Everything that later became and element of what ‘contract’ is about in ‘common law’ is demonstrated here. And that is followed up by the story of ‘a bride for Isaac,’ which not only shows us THE template for marriage, but for what it means to be a “good and faithful servant,” and to come “in the name of” the master.

As a nation and a world slide into lawlessness, the foundational nature of the events described in such detail in this parsha become ever more important. But the level of DETAIL about these events gives us an even greater insight into the promises of Yah.

And that is the focus of the Sabbath Day teaching. Abraham is THE original example in Scripture of a “man of faith.” The promises we inherited through him are still at the heart of what Covenant is about. Yet they only became manifest in his life when HE took personal action and responsibility. There is a lesson in that for us. And, yes, again – ESPECIALLY ‘in such a time as this!’

Parsha “Vayera” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha “Vayera” (Genesis chapters 18 through 22) begins with the story of Sarah’s laughter, and Abraham’s “dickering” with Yahuah regarding the coming destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and ends with the “Akieda,” or ‘binding of Isaac.”

Parsha “Lekh Lekha” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa Fellowship for a two-part study of the first parsha in the life of the first of the patriarchs, Abram — before and up to his name change.

It’s known as “Lekh Lekha” (Genesis chapters 12 through 17) because the first unique words, and indeed the start of his walk before Yahuah, is “Get the OUT…” of the place you are, and go to the place I will show you.

Is is surprising at all that those words still apply today?

The Sabbath Day teaching is again about some parallels. Abram, before he was renamed, had a ‘narrow path’ of his own to walk. And he was human, he made some mistakes. Perhaps just as interesting, from our perspective today, he ‘came out of’ a pagan place, as was told to go to ‘the land’ — but that too was in fact a pagan place.

It’s what we can learn about his ‘walk before Me’ en route that we need to pay attention to ‘in such a time as this.’

Parsha “Noach” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa Fellowship for a two-part look at one of the most well-know — and now that includes for “prophetic” reasons as well! — portions in the Torah, Noach (or Noah, Genesis 6:8 through chapter 11).

This parsha begins with the Flood. And there is certainly much associated with that event that most people who only heard about it in “sunday school” are’t aware of. But it also extends through and into the next big “cycle” in history and Scripture as well.

Parsha “Bereshiet” teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week the Torah cycle begings anew, “Bereshiet”, or literally, In the Beginning.

This is the bedrock the ‘foundation’ upon which all that follows rests. And it’s perhaps one of the most densely “information packed” sets of chapters in the entire Book. In the beginning is not just the creation story, or the garden story, or even ‘the Fall,’ and a whole lotta begattin‘

It’s really about Authority, and obedience, marriage, deception, and exile.

People who understand that — whether it’s the human eye, a bird’s wing, the DNA double helix, the night sky, or Maxwell’s equations — that there MUST be a Creator, may not be so convinced that the Bible really IS His Word. Study Genesis!

And have them start ‘in the beginning.’ But, as Mark points out, if you REALLY want to understand just how much “information” is packed into even the first verse of that Word, get as close as you can to the Original, because it is literally impossible to translate it all into any other form. Even mathematics…

But that part of the story that ultimately tells us about the human condidtion, and “Adam-kind,” just begins in chapter 3!
