Parsha “Vayishlach”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for a two-part look at the parsha “Vayishlach” (Genesis 32:3 rheough chapter 36).

The Erev Shabbat story continues the story of the life of the patriarch Yakov (Jacob) following his instruction from YHVH to “return to the land of your fathers.”

SSM Vayishlach 2019

During the Sabbath Day study, Mark looks into some more of the ambiguity that seems to surround this man who is so identified with “emet” or Truth in Scripture, and yet is still at the center of so much confusion.

Why, for example, does his name get changed, but – not really?

It’s not just Yakov who “wrestled.” ALL of us who don’t understand why he, and his descendants, are STILL so often unable to recognize who we really are, or what the significance of those names are anyway, are still fighting the same battle he did.

There are more questions than answers in this parsha. But they are questions we much answer ourselves, just as he did.

“Vayishlach: “Did Yakov REALLY become ‘Israel’ – and what does that say to US?”

Parsha “Vayetze”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for a two-part look at the parsha (“Vayetze”, Genesis 28:10 – 32:3) that initiates the “twelve tribes of Israel.”

Warning: Even by the “no-hold-barred” standards when it comes to what is ACTUALLY Written that regular listeners will appreciate, because of the portion this week, Mark is PARTICULARLY “not Politically Correct,” and that means some of what is actually Written, and that we’ve been lied to about for so long, may seem shocking, or even offensive.

But our Messiah warned us about that, too.

The Erev Shabbat survey first continues the story of Yakov’s journey after he leaves home, from his own personal, “Now I know for SURE,” encounter with the Creator of the Universe, to his wives and the birth of his twelve sons and daughter.

SSM Vayetze 2019

It is on the Sabbath Day where Mark again sets out to “connect dots”. Yes, much of this story — for a number of reasons — is again “problematic”. From how Yakov ended up with four wives, to how too much of ‘the church’ has been convinced that ‘the law has been done away with,’ when Scripture says so clearly otherwise, we seem to see an element of human nature that might be called “voluntary blindness”. We much choose instead to have “eyes to see!”

Parsha “Toldot”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha ‘Toldot’ (Genesis/Bereshiet 25:19 – 28:10 ) is ostensibly the last part of the story of the second of the patriarchs, Yitzak (Isaac) but also begins the story of Yakov.

In the Erev Shabbat overview, we are told “these are the GENERATIONS (toldot) of Isaac,” and, of course, a whole lot more:

The Sabbath Day teaching begins with a number of questions, because this parsh inspires many. Was Yitzak REALLY that blind when he ended up blessing the ‘wrong’ son? Or was it something else? And how can the life of the man so identified with “emet”, or Truth, begin with such deception. What can we learn from a story that really seems so “problematic?”

Parsha “Chayei Sarah”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Parsha, Chayei Sarah (Genesis/Bereshiet 23:1 through 25:18) is about far more than the “Life of Sarah”. And it has a lot more to teach us even than the fact that it is THE first and most fundamental example of many elements of law, from contracts and “power of attorney” to marriage.

In the Erev Shabbat overlook look at the entire section, Mark looks at the Torah portion which is probably the most fundamental in the Bible when it comes to understanding the ‘common law’.

The Sabbath Day follow-up begins with a premise that Mark has explored for years: How do America go from a “nation of Law, not of men,” based on the once “self-evident Truth” that there IS a God, and Creator of the Universe, Who made us in His image, and then Wrote instruction for us, to a place where men’s oaths before Him mean nothing.

And that is related to another major element of this parsha, in that Abraham was blessed “in ALL” — even before Yitzak, the son of promise, had a wife. What does that tell us about how we should deal with yet ANOTHER land and time where “lawlessness abounds”?

The combined two-part teaching is entitled, “Chayei Sarah:  Remedy B’kol!”

and is also available from the Hebrew Nation page.

Parsha “Vayeira”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This parsha, Vayeira (Genesis/Bereshiet chapters 18 through 22) is probably one of the most…
…Critical, Prophetic, Demonstrative, Fundamental… (and so on!) in all of Scripture.

In the Erev Shabbat overlook look at the entire section, Mark explores why. From Sarah’s prophetic “laughter” at hearing she would bear a son at a ripe old age, to the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah, and “righteous Lot”, to one of the most important “tests” (or is it?) in the Book, this parsha has a LOT to consider.

This parsha is not only one of the mostest of all of those various things outlined above, from prophetic to fundamental, it is also one of the most CONTROVERSIAL. Was Abraham REALLY asked by the Creator of the Universe to commit the heinous sin/crime of murder, or even human sacrifice? Certainly there have been no shortage of attempts to rationalize, justify, or even explain away a Torah-contradiction like that.

If you’ve heard Mark’s previous commentaries on this parsha, you know that this ‘test’ is nothing of the sort, and that is clear from the context, and the text. But there is SO MUCH MORE, here. And so many ways that the Author has woven together in this narrative, the prophetic fulfillment(s!) that follow, and in challenges that STILL confound us today, a message that has never been more apropos, or important.

Don’t miss this one!

Here is the combined two-part teaching:

Parsha “Lekh Lekha”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

‘Lekh Lekha’ is literally THE Original “Come out of her” parsha in the Book (well, “Get OUT of the Garden,” was a different command for a different reason…)

The man who becomes the ‘First Patriarch’ and Father of Nations is told to “Get OUT of your country, out of your father’s house, away from kind,” and basically everything you knew and grew up with (pagan as it was) — and GO to a place that I, YHVH, will show you.

Talk about a walk of faith.

Mark Call first takes a look at the “whole story” in the Erev Shabbat Overview teaching, from the time the man then called “Abram,” first heard the command, and then the promise, and simply obeyed, to his sojourn and all-too-human mistakes in Egypt, to his multi-year challenges in realizing Yahuah had a plan for his heir all along, even if it might have even seemed funny on first hearing.

The Sabbath Day ‘deeper look’ into the story, the lessons, the haftorah, the related teachings of the Torah-Made-Flesh, and our OWN walk via the lessons of Abraham, begins with that “Come OUT” admonition, and goes all the way to a whole LOT of ‘politically incorrect’ questions even — like why are prayers that we’re at least TOLD ‘in his name’ not answered on our timetable?

Abraham is a model of what it means to be a man who literally walks in faith. But other lessons in Scripture show us there’s more to what is expected, even of us, than just meeting some minimum standard.

Parsha “Noach”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

Most of the time, the services from Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship include a look at the overall weekly Torah portion, followed later on by a look at some “current events” that relate to lessons “for such a time as this.”

This week, for parsha “Noach” (Genesis chapters 6 through 11), Mark decided to “reverse the order,” for reasons that should be clear. Since the story of Noach (aka ‘Noah,’ or evev Noe in the KJV) and The Flood are reasonably well-known (even if there’s a WHOLE lot folks learned in sun-day-skool that’s Just Plain Wrong!) and we’re told in Matthew 24 that “as it was in the time of Noah” it either will be, or more to the point – already IS, it makes sense to outline some of that up front:

Having set the stage for some of the ‘parallels,’ it’s time to turn to the specifics of the Days of Noach:

The Sabbath Day portion of the combined teaching is almost a “part 2” of what the prophecy about “as it was in the Days of Noach” means, with two specific focus elements:

– how does ‘the earth was filled with ‘chamas’ REALLY look? Does that word mean more than just “violence” (hint: Yes!)

– and something Mark-the-engineer likens to “the Filtering Process”. How does He separate “wheat from chaff,” the ‘dross’ from precious silver or gold, those who are swept away from those who CHOOSE to be LEFT BEHIND!? (The ‘Rapture Cult’ really does seem to have gotten the message from both the time of Noach, and the Messiah, BACKWARD.)

“Noach: As it was in the days of, part II,
– OR –
The Filtering Process”

Parsha “Bereshiet”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week is again a bit different, not only because the old annual Torah cycle is now complete, along with the final of the Fall Feasts, but because “Bereshiet,” or ‘In The Beginning,’ is itself unique. And so absolutely packed full of fundamentally critical information, upon which literally EVERYTHING else in the Bible ultimately rests, that it’s a virtual impossibility to do it justice in just a single week’s study.

Mark begins not only “in the beginning”, but with a recap of why the first characters in the Book, in the original language, constitutes some of the mostly “densely-packed” information in existence. From there, it’s important that our Creator “knew the end from the beginning,” which goes a long way to explaining why the Book doesn’t simply END at chapter 3.

Also a bit different this week is the format of the presentation. Although taught in the usual two parts, this time the whole teaching is presented as a whole:

“Bereshiet:  REAL Foundations – and Why They Are Being Destroyed”

Final Shabbat of Sukkot from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

This week is of course a bit different, because it is a Sabbath which is not only close to the closing of the Torah itself, but the week of Sukkot, or the ‘Feast of Tabernacles’ as well. So we get a different set of readings, and even a bit of “fielder’s choice” as Mark takes a look at some Writings and prophecies that aren’t often part of the regular cycle.

And “cycles” are certainly at the heart of the lessons, and the instruction, too!

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for another two-part look at a whole LOT of appropriate Scriptures for this final Sabbath of Sukkot, from the Gospel of Luke to Ecclesiastes, and prophecies of this “time in-between”.

First, the Erev Shabbat setup:

SSM Sukkot Shabbat Kol HaMoed

and then the Sabbath Day, and ‘Sukkot Cycle Wrap-up’:

Parsha “Ha’azinu”– teaching from Shabbat Shalom Mesa

As the regular annual cycle Torah portion readings come to a conclusion, we get several short, but very pithy, and even more dramatically relevant portions that should REALLY reasonate today.

Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship for another two-part look at the chapter 32 of Deuteronomy, parsha “Ha’azinu” and the related haftorah and prophetic readings of Moses’/Moshe’s extended teaching as he literally sings the final verses and turns over leadership to Yohushua/Joshua.

This ‘Song of Moses’ — as Mark shows — is not only prophetic, but it demonstrates why “cycles” not only describe what happens prophetically, but why and HOW we can understand history…

…while the Sabbath Day portion of the teaching details what we should DO as a result, and how.
